Essential Tajweed Rules Every Muslim Beginner Should Master

Sheikh Dr. Ahmed Al-Azhari

What is Tajweed and Why is It Obligatory?

The word Tajweed (ุชุฌูˆูŠุฏ) linguistically means 'enhancement' or 'doing something well'. In the context of Quranic recitation, it refers to giving every Arabic letter its rightful pronunciation, characteristics, and rules of articulation.

Allah Subhanuhu Wa Ta'ala commands in the Quran:

"And recite the Quran with measured recitation (Tartฤซl)." (Surah Al-Muzzammil 73:4)

The Fundamental Pillars of Tajweed

1. Makharij al-Huroof (Points of Articulation)

There are 17 primary articulation points across 5 main regions of the speech apparatus:

  • Al-Jawf (The Empty Space in the Mouth & Throat): Prolongation letters (Alif, Waw, Yaa)
  • Al-Halq (The Throat): 6 deep guttural letters (ุก, ู‡ู€, ุน, ุญ, ุบ, ุฎ)
  • Al-Lisaan (The Tongue): 18 letters produced from various points along the tongue
  • Ash-Shafatayn (The Lips): Letters (ู…, ุจ, ูˆ, ู)
  • Al-Khayshoom (The Nasal Cavity): The sound of Ghunnah

2. Noon Sakinah & Tanween Rules

Whenever a silent Noon (ู†ู’) or Tanween appears, one of four essential rules applies:

  1. Izhar (Clarification): Pronouncing clearly without nasal delay when followed by throat letters.
  2. Idgham (Merging): Blending into the letters of Yarmaloon (ูŠุฑู…ู„ูˆู†).
  3. Iqlab (Conversion): Converting the Noon sound into a gentle Meem when followed by Baa (ุจ).
  4. Ikhfa (Concealment): Hiding the Noon with a 2-count nasal Ghunnah before the remaining 15 letters.

3. Madd (Elongation & Prolongation)

Understanding natural Madd (2 counts) versus secondary Madd (4-6 counts due to Hamzah or Sukoon) gives Quranic recitation its distinct cadence and majestic beauty.
